Usage of Modals in Subject Verb Agreement

Usage of Modals in Subject Verb Agreement:

Modal verbs (will, would, should, may, can, could, might, must) precede another verb. Modals do not change their form to agree with the subject.

  • When they occur with a verb, the third person -s in the present tense and the -ed in the past tense of the verb are both dropped.
  • Remember that modal with auxiliary verbs do not have a different third-person form ending is s:

  • She can sit beside me.
  • He cans play the flute. (Incorrect)
  • He can play the flute. (Correct)
  • You must leave before noon tomorrow.
  • Jimmy could packs his lunch for work. (Incorrect)
  • Jimmy could pack his lunch for work. (Correct)
  • Modal as : Ought and Used : Ought and used do not change the form, but they are always used with a to-infinitive:

  • I ought to learn more grammar.
  • I used to enjoy grammar.
